Return of the Hobby Shop?

With the huge ammount of fakes on eBay these days, is it just a matter of time untill the hobby is forced to return to hobby shops to be sure to get a legit card?

And fakers - jesus at least try to make them look real.

  1. I don't know if people will give up the convenience and low cost of buying online, but seeing a return to true hobby shops would be nice.

  2. The only obstacle in the way of the return of the hobby shop are online retailers like Dave and Adams.

For example, I'd been looking to purchase a hobby box of 2007 Masterpieces (baseball) for quite some time. Dave and Adams has it for $47. My shop had it for $57. At first glance, it seems like a no-brainer to order online, right? But wait: there's shipping! $7 from DA Cardworld, and now they're only a few bucks cheaper. What's a collector to do?

With these tough times, for many that few bucks is worth saving. But for me, it makes my shop look pretty damn reasonable, plus by going there I get to walk around and look at all sorts of products, support a local business, and get what I can be almost 100% positive is unsearched. I don't think the owner searches packs, and with all of them behind a counter, nobody else can, either.

But while I once turned to ebay for purchases - and still may for things not worth the effort to forge (think boxes from the mid-90s to complete sets) - I'm now officially to concerned about counterfeiting to shop ebay any longer.

My point, I guess, is that shops may see a bit of a resurgence. At least I hope so! I wonder how much - if any - impact blogs have had? It's way more fun to post about breaks of boxes obtained in person and share a little story about the experience!
